Pan hammer.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds comes out on PlayStation 4 in December - one year after it hit Xbox One as a timed console exclusive.

Video game analyst Daniel Ahmad took to ResetEra to say the battle royale game was coming to Sony's console next month, and Eurogamer understands this to be true.

PUBG's arrival on PS4 doesn't come as a huge surprise, after it was leaked by the Korean ratings board and, more recently, Sony's servers spat out PUBG images (as spotted by a user on PSNProfiles).

Meanwhile, Microsoft has teased "big PUBG news" for its XO18 event, which kicks off this Saturday, 10th November. I doubt it'll be to announce the PS4 version during Microsoft's main event. Perhaps a new map?

In more bizarre PUBG news, the game has an unexpected Suicide Squad crossover, which means you can play wearing the Joker or Harley Quinn skins. Yum.

Fortnite, with its recent playable Thanos event, aligning itself with Marvel and PUBG going with DC Universe makes a lot of sense to me for some reason.

Is this still a thing?
Going by Steam charts it's still played by around 1 million players daily though that has dropped from its peak of 3 million at the beginning of 2018. No idea on XBox numbers. That's a lot more than game like Warframe which has around 100k players daily though interestingly with Warframe player numbers are continually increasing (it was around 18-20k in 2013-2014) and that will likely rise further when Fortuna is released.

I do think that the Battle Royale genre is getting oversaturated. Fortnite is the current champion but with H1Z1, PUBG and the upcoming CoD Black Ops 4 Blackout, BFV Firestorm and other games trying to jump on the bandwagon, at some point people will get fed up of the genre and move onto something else.

A few words from the PUBG HQ Team in Korea
From Koo Sung Jeong, PS4 Lead Project Manager:

“One of most memorable moments while developing PS4 PUBG was the first time we had 100 people join a test match. Before the test, the dev team’s mission was to deliver the finished product this year – it was a big challenge and it felt almost impossible. But as soon as we had 100 people drop in for the test, our confidence started to build and and we pushed ourselves harder to make everything happen. We are proud of the game we have created and can’t wait to get it into your hands!”

From Changmin Lee, PS4 Engineering Lead:

“It’s always exciting and tense presenting our work to the players as a developer. Getting our game into the hands of the PS4 community that haven’t experienced PUBG is a thrill equal to creating a new game. Everyone on the PS4 dev team have worked passionately on every single moment of the game to create a perfect experience for our players – we hope you all enjoy your journey on getting a chicken dinner!”

As we prepare for the official launch on 7th December, be sure to stay up to date on the latest news at our website and social channels. The team here at PUBG have worked tirelessly to bring our unique Battle Royale experience to this platform, and we can’t wait to start this new journey with you.

Everything you need to know about PUBG on PS4 ahead of its 7th December launch
Learn how PUBG has evolved to where it is today, plus details on the launch day log-in gift

Hey everyone, we are back with another PUBG dev blog! PUBG has had a relatively quick, but intense journey up until this point. The game has released on other platforms in the last two years with changes throughout the many phases of alpha and beta testing, from performance improvements and optimisation, new weapons, new maps, new vehicles, and more.

Now that we’re getting ready to launch the game on PlayStation 4 on 7th December, we’d like to reflect on our development and feedback from our community, which has brought PUBG to where it is today.

The road to launch

When we first started developing PUBG for console, the game was released as a beta, meaning stability was something we worked very hard to address.

After a long beta phase and feedback from the community, optimisation and stabilisation became key for us. It was quite the challenge for the dev team to juggle our focus on stability while trying not to delay content that our community had been asking for, like newer maps. But this was a challenge that we were willing to take on.

While we’ve grown considerably since our initial introduction on consoles, user experience and stability will always remain a pivotal aspect of our development.

We are also focused on adding new content to the game and bringing custom matches, Ranked System, and event mode to the PlayStation 4 version after launch. We’ve very excited to take the lessons we’ve learned and share them with the PlayStation community when we launch on 7th December.

PlayStation launch day – 7th December

What can you expect on launch day on 7th December? You’ll get to experience the heart-pounding, last-man standing action of PUBG gameplay on three iconic maps:

  • Erangel, the first map of PUBG. An 8×8 km map resembling a Russian military testing facility
  • Miramar, the second map created for PUBG. An 8×8 km map set in the deserts of Central and South America
  • Sanhok, the smallest map (4×4 km) based in the jungles of the Southeast Asia region
In addition, we’re excited to announce the exclusive gift for our PlayStation community to celebrate the launch. Starting on 7th December, simply log into the game to receive the Pixel Art Parachute, inspired by the PlayStation iconic blue.

Pre-order now

You can still pre-order PUBG before the game releases on PS4 7th December! We have several different bundles to choose from, all of which offer two exclusive pre-order digital skins: The Nathan Drake desert outfit from the Uncharted series, and Ellie’s backpack from The Last of Us.

Pre-order and also receive two instant rewards – the PUBG avatar for your PlayStation Network profile as well as a Theme.

We offer different editions depending on what you’re looking for.

The countdown is on: we’ve only a few days until the official launch. We hope to see many of you at launch and can’t wait to join the PlayStation community on 7th December!
