Rescue a Skell Tech engineer being held hostage by Unidad forces in the latest update

There’s never been a better time to jump into Ghost Recon Wildlands as Operation Oracle brings new, free story content to PS4 players on 2ndMay.
Adding two new missions that you can tackle solo or with up to three friends in four-player co-op, Operation Oracle will task the Ghosts with rescuing a Skell Tech engineer being held hostage by Unidad forces.

What begins as a simple rescue mission suddenly takes a turn for the complex when you meet Cole D. Walker, a Ghost Team Leader who will make you question the difference between friend and foe.

If you want to try the game for free, including Operation Oracle and all other post-launch content, you’re in luck, as Ghost Recon Wildlands will be free for all PS4 players from 2nd-5th May. You can preload the game on 1st May, and all progress you make during the free weekend will carry over if you decide to purchase the game afterwards. PlayStation Plus is still required to play any online modes.

Operation Oracle is part of a series of free post-launch updates to Ghost Recon Wildlands, which have so far included the Ghost War PvP and Tier 1 modes, as well as Special Operation missions featuring crossovers with Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher, Rainbow Six Operators, and even the Predator.

Stéphane Boudon, Content Director at Ubisoft Bordeaux, sat down to chat about those previous missions, what it was like to bring them into the game, and what the Ghosts will face in Operation Oracle.

Ghost Recon Wildlands Operation Oracle

Ghost Recon Wildlands has received a great deal of post-launch support with its Special Operations, starting with the Sam Fisher appearance in Special Operation 1. What have been some of your favorite parts of working on these?

Stéphane Boudon:
Developing a full-fledged Year 2 for Ghost Recon Wildlands was a great opportunity to expand the universe of Ghost Recon by inviting famous guests into the world. We are quite proud of the results and the community reception to the different Operations, and we are hoping to finish this with a bang with Operation Oracle! Year 2 was also a way for us to start teasing the future, as more clues may surface regarding Skell Technology.

As a developer but also as a player, bringing [Ghost leader] Scott Mitchell back was one of my favorite parts of Year 2. Working closely with narrative designers and writers to make everything fit perfectly was so satisfying! One of our challenges was to visually recreate Scott, as the old fella never really existed in HD before. Speaking of Scott, you may discover some new clues about him in Operation Oracle.

How important has community feedback been in shaping the content in the Special Operation updates? What are some of biggest tweaks and gameplay changes you’ve made in response to feedback?

Community feedback truly shaped the content of Year 2 and each Special Operation. While we wanted to surprise our players by bringing new guests to the Wildlands, everything else was dictated by what the community wanted, from the inclusion of a Photo Mode, to the development of Guerilla mode [in which players defend key locations by fighting off waves of enemies], to the release of new weapons, setting the time of day, new night vision goggles, and so on.

Ghost Recon Wildlands Operation Oracle

Operation Oracle goes into some interesting territory. What makes this such a special mission for the Ghosts?

With Operation Oracle, we want to truly challenge players and their perception of Wildlands. The arrival of another Ghost Leader, Cole D. Walker, will cast a new light on the Ghosts’ CIA informant, Karen Bowman. We really cannot wait to see how players will react!

What sets this special mission apart from the previous Special Operations in Wildlands?

While each Special Operation brought new PVE and PVP content, this update is slightly different, as it focuses on the two new missions in which players will get to encounter Cole D. Walker. What happens here might very well set the stage for the future.

What type of content have you been able to deliver post-launch that wouldn’t have been possible around the time of launch?

For us, the greatest opportunity with this post-launch support was to be able to surprise old and new players with exciting content, but also to address their feedback and requests. Having this conversation with the community helped us grow as a team and evolve the overall experience of Ghost Recon Wildlands.

The Photo mode is a great example. As developers, we are able to pause the game, move the camera, and change the weather or the time of day freely; it’s something very common for us. I frequently saw developers roaming and getting lost in the world we built, checking details, or playing with FX frozen in action. I do it myself frequently.

Around time of launch, we recognised all the potential we had here, but obviously we had more important aspects of the game to address and we didn’t have the time to tackle all the technical issues of Photo mode. Post-launch gave us the space to bring it to the community, and now thanks to the players, we can see just how gorgeous the world of Wildlands is.

Ghost Recon Wildlands Operation Oracle

If someone hasn’t tried out Wildlands yet, where should they start?

Jump into the main story, complete the first mission, and get your first sniper rifle. Once you’re there, head over to Montuyoc in the southwest of the map to unlock and start Operation Oracle. It might be a challenge, but you will be in good company!

Operation Oracle is coming free to Ghost Recon Wildlands players on 2ndMay. Ghost Recon Wildlands will also be free to download and try between 2nd-5th May from PlayStation Store.

If anyone tries this I'd be happy to jump into a team ( as long as I can get home)

Annoyingly they have literally just hiked the full ultimate edition version back to to full price at the start of the "free weekend" - it was around 30/35 for EVERYTHING to date.

You can pick up the base edition just now for £13 but the 2 level DLC packs are £12 each or £30 for the season 1 pass alone (there also a season 2 pass at around the same rate).

Very much enjoying it though so maybe I'll spend the £13 but I'm annoyed about the situation.

Sounds like BR vs Div 1 plus the new bleeding mechanics from Breakpoint.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands Update: Mercenaries
Your support of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Wildlands since the launch has been truly incredible. Through strong PvE content, Ghost War, iconic character appearances, and community requested features, you’ve stood beside us through every step of the journey.
With Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon® Breakpoint coming this October, we want to send off Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands with one last major update as a thank-you to the community. The update will introduce a brand-new mode that is truly a unique experience.
We’re proud to introduce you to Mercenaries. We’re excited to experiment with this concept to bring something new and different before we launch the next installment in the franchise.
What Is Mercenaries?
Mercenaries is an eight-player free-for-all PvPvE gameplay experience. Your objective is to call for rescue, locate and reach the extraction point, and be the first to board the chopper.
Phase 1: Recon
[GRW] [News] [July 17th] Screenshot 1

At the beginning of the match, your extraction point is unknown and you will have no weapons, gear, or items. You will need to locate and activate radio transmitters to shrink the possible extract zone on your map.
In order to locate the transmitters, you will need to find an intel marker. After interacting with the intel, you will have three choices to gain an advantage through the position of a transmitter and a randomly determined selection of the following:
  • The position of other players for a limited amount of time
  • The position of rare items like gear and weapons
  • The position of a vehicle
After you use intel or a transmitter, you will not be able to use it again. Your opponents will be able to use it, if they haven’t already.
During this phase, you will need to compete with other players and face Unidad soldiers to locate transmitters. You’ll also need to find gear and weapons to give yourself a competitive edge.
Once you activate three transmitters, you’ll reveal the exact position of the extraction point and gain one out of the five segments needed to fill your extraction gauge and board the helicopter.
Phase 2: Helicopter Deployment
[GRW] [News] [July 17th] Screenshot 2

When you’ve activated three transmitters, the helicopter will start flying to the extraction point. When the helicopter lands, the location will be revealed to all players.
Those who haven’t activated three transmitters can still continue to gather intel.
Depending on your strategy, you can use intel to get better gear, reveal enemy player locations, or gather three transmitters yourself to begin filling your extraction gauge before reaching the helicopter.
Phase 3: Extraction
[GRW] [News] [July 17th] Screenshot 3

Once you’ve reached the extraction point, you will need to fill a gauge to board the helicopter. The gauge can be filled by staying in a set area around the helicopter.
This gauge will have checkpoints, and if you are forced to leave the area or want to set a trap for the other mercenaries, the gauge will remain filled to the last checkpoint you reached.
The helicopter will not extract you if there are other players in the area, so you’ll have to use your best tactics to keep the other mercenaries out when your gauge is full.
New Mechanics
Loot Your Gear
When you spawn in the match, you will be equipped with nothing but your melee weapon. It will be on you to find the best gear, weapons, and consumables to fight enemy players and the Unidad forces.
Located around the map and on the bases, there will be caches where you are be able to find everything from sniper rifles and flashbangs to armored vests and healing syringes.
If you die, you will lose all of the loot you gathered and start at square one when you respawn.
This is Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, so good tactics will always be rewarded. Utilizing the transmitter system, exploring the map, and infiltrating Unidad bases for loot will give you plenty of opportunities to get back in the game even if you die.
Armor and Health
Mercenaries will have a new health and armor system. Based on the gear you pick up, an armor bar will appear. This bar will absorb a percentage of damage based on the penetration capability of your opponent’s weapon.
If you are hit by a weapon that deals penetration damage, you’ll start to bleed. When bleeding begins, you’ll start to gradually lose a percentage of your health.
If you are injured, you can loot three different types of healing items to get back into fighting shape:
  • Medikit restores all health and will stop bleeding
  • Bandage stops bleeding but will not restore health
  • Syringe restores health but will not stop bleeding
Destructibles
[GRW] [News] [July 17th] Screenshot 4

In Mercenaries, destructible doors can be opened with a CQC. Behind these doors, you’ll have the chance to find loot to help you take on other players and Unidad.
You’ll have to think tactically about when to do it as your opponents will be able to hear you breaking the doors if they are close by.
It’s up to you to weigh the risks against the rewards in every scenario of Mercenaries.
Rewards
Lone Wolf Costume
[GRW] [News] [July 17th] Walker Costume

After completing your first game, you will be granted the Lone Wolf costume as a reward to thank all players who try out this mode.
Mercenary Items
You will also obtain rewards based on your number of wins:
  • 1st Win: Mercenary Patch
  • 3rd Win: Mercenary Pants
  • 5th Win: Mercenary Heavy Vest
  • 10th Win: Jacket Army Mercenary
  • 15th Win: Mercenary Heavy Vest with Shoulder Pads
  • 25th Win: Mercenary Backpack
BUG FIXES AND IMPROVEMENTS
  • (PVP) Sapper mines will now blink while activating, similar to the Trapper.
  • (PVP) Fixed exploits in the Dust Town, Lithium Mine, Zinc Mine, and Institute maps.
  • (GUERILLA MODE) Fixed an issue in Guerrilla Mode where players would be rewarded with more Prestige Credits than intended.
  • (GUERILLA MODE) Fixed an issue in Guerrilla Mode where a player would respawn in their "dead" animation when the revive is interrupted by the respawn mechanic.
  • (PVE) Fixed an issue where the player would not receive Carzita's briefing video when entering Agua Verde.
  • (PVE) Fixed an issue where Nomad would walk instead of crouching or crawling after picking up a dropped weapon.
  • (PVE) Fixed a visual issue in the Itacua province.

I only have the cheapy base version which I bough t on the sale, does that include that PvPvE-thingy?
YES !

I'm in the same boat and still gutted about missing out on the all bells & whistles version for cheap - the offer finished immediately prior to their last free weekend!

Seen a few people on the "technical test" recently. Did you pre order to get in on that?

Less buggy than the previous test?

No, randomly selected people who were on the previous technical test were invited to play on this one. I got an invite and a code but when I tried to use it it said I'd already got the game. However I'd previously uninstalled it and couldn't find it at first look in my download list and with me playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Star Trek Bridge Crew over the weekend I didn't get a chance to play it.
