I have lost alot of my free time over the past 2 years playing Elite Dangerous on the PC.

And after a year of Elite being available on Xbox, it is coming to PS4.

Later this week Frontier are at PAX East and will be hosting streams that show what the latest patch 2.3 can do, including the new multicrew function (up to 3 players on one ship), plus demoing the game on PS4.

Unlike minecraft the game has parity on capabilities across PC, Xbox and PS4 (so no waiting months years to be able to do the same thing).

Its kind of an MMO, but Frontier don't want to go down the Eve route of player owned guilds, gold farmers, etc.

Potentially (and this is me dreaming) this will have PSVR interoperability as they do support Vive and Oculus etc in the PC game.

But if you like flying space ships, exploring the 400 Billion stars in the galaxy, transporting passengers, hunting bounties on pirates, pirating innocent people for cargo, smuggling illegal goods, fighting in combat zones, trading and even Player vs Player fights this may be the game for you.

Although it may eat up your game time!

@zoob do you need a tissue? ;)

I am hoping that like War Thunder Elite on PS4 will have HOTAS support, although seeing people on Xbone and PC are using gamepads to fly ships, it shouldn't be that tough.

I am a bit spoiled on PC with HOTAS, voice attack and Head tracker, but starting again on PS4 especially with Multicrew and the tweaks so far all there (planetary landings, Engineers, Thargoids etc.) will make me spend my spare time on console rather than my clapped out PC.

Its one common Universe, but you will only meet PS4 players in PS4 version.

Some interesting vids on what Multicrew and patch 2.3 is looking like at main Elite youtube website.

I've got it on the PC but stopped playing it as it just absorbed incredible amounts of time - and that was without all the add-ons.

Its a slow burner definitely, although combat can be fast and brief there is a lot to do to get up in the ranks, and the more powerful ships.

Some say its grindy, but are not most MMO games? It really scratches my Sci-Fi need for flying a ship and shooting stuff itch.

Like Xbox owners when they had exclusiove launch you cant transfer over accounts from PC game and start with oodles of wonga and megamungous ships.

Also played the original for months if not more "back in the day" on the C64 and have been keeping an eye on this as well.
And yes, praying for VR support on PS4.

I had it originally on the Acorn Electron, and my Dad would "borrow" the schools BBC B and its 5.25" Disk Drive and we would play Elite during summer holidays.

My best memory was loading up Elite on Christmas day, and with my brother practice docking at a Coriolis whilst listening to Nik Kershaw singing "Don Quixote".

In the mean time I am sacrificing a selection of small toys to the effigy of David Braben hoping that PSVR is supported.

I used to play frontier on the Amiga and I enjoyed it, but it's quest for realism got in the way of the fun, the dog fighting was unplayable, you just used missiles alla the time because actually hitting ships was nigh on impossible . Also missions might involve you assassinating someone who was leaving planet at a certain time meaning you had to hang around a location til that exact time to follow them, you could speed up time but risked over shooting and missing your target, it was all very tedious at times. Is elite dangerous more of the same or have they made some considerations to players having more fun.

@yinkin Elite Dangerous is more like the original Elite, as in flight model is that if WW2 fighters. Combat is dogfights not just sitting km away and shooting missiles. This was a design imperative from Frontier who wanted an enjoyable and engaging experience, not true newtonian armoured spheres with firing solutions and engagement distances of 40km plus.

Combat is between 0 to 2km distance, where you can go from seeing the whites of the CMDRs eyes or at a comfortable distance to see the ship and its paintjob explode in fiery death.

To get a bit nerdy there is a flight assist off mode as well, that means the ships systems does not automatically correct your control direction and give you an experience of flight, this is when you can fly in one direction and flip your ship to be facing backwards, or sideways etc. Useful when you are up against Elite enemies and for any PvP interaction.

Although in PvP engagements there is a meta over shields and modified weapons, the typical PvE engagement with NPC's you willmost likely being using lasers or multicannons to strip shield and then damage hull respectively, there are variants in laser type and also ordnance based weapons, so you can pick an choose to suit your playstyle. ie. there is no "wrong" ship or "wrong" weapon set that you can fly with.

Missions, there are assasination missions, they have timers, but they start when you get to the location, so no hanging about, but expire if the timer runs out. Missions also include transporting data, cargo and passengers to various locations (some passenger missions may be transporting scientists to the galaxy core or a distant nebula!). Assassination as well as kill pirates or system security ships, land based kill skimmer missions as well as data scanning missions, black box recovery missions, escape pod recovery missions. There are also mining and commodity supply missions as well.

Typically there are about 20 general missions and 20 passenger missions per starport you visit, not all will suit your ship and capabilities, rewards vary depending on system economy and political state as well as how good your reputation is with each faction that provides the mission.

Played since launch in 2014 on PC , so its still fun!

I'll shut up now. ;)

The last part of this vid shows a guy in one of the biggest ship you can fly doing some ship combat.

Ignore first part, its nerdy ship optimisation stuff.

LOL yes it can be a "Where has the last 5 hours gone?" kind of game, I think I willl keep my PC account and have a new CMDR on PS4 to see how the start upgame feels like now.
