Get a Free Golden Key for Borderlands 2 Using This Method

September 18, 2012 - Cameron Morawski -

A helpful little tip for those of you who are picking up Borderlands 2 either at midnight in your respective time zones, or later today for those without midnight releases.

  • Start up your Borderlands 2 game.
  • Go to the Extras menu.
  • Click the “Shift” item.
  • Click Sign Up, agree to the terms, and enter your desired email and password, then proceed.
  • Back out to the main menu, then go back to the Shift area.
  • Press [] for PS3, or X for Xbox 360 to go the the “My Offers” section, and there you should have a message waiting informing you that a complimentary Golden Key is available to you now for signing up. Enjoy!
Note: The Golden Key message may take a few minutes, though it should be instant.

For those unaware of the golden key and its purposes, here's some information from http://www.justpushstart.com/2012/09/borderlands-2-golden-key-chest-combo-detailed/

Borderlands 2 Golden Key Chest Combo Detailed

September 13, 2012 - Cameron Morawski -

The chest you see above is something you should definitely look out for while you are playing Borderlands 2 if you wouldn’t mind some sweet loot. Though not particularly detailed where in, this chest will be located in the city of Sanctuary. According to Gearbox: “This should take you about three hours (two hours to play through the missions leading up to Sanctuary, and one hour for physical recovery after you injure yourself laughing at the impeccably written dialog).”

When opening this chest, you will receive purple loot based on your current player’s level. If you have forgotten the Borderlands system, purple is code for very rare in terms of loot. It is also mentioned by Gearbox that while you can, like with any other weapon in the game trade, sell, or give away the golden chest’s loot, you cannot trade or sell golden keys. Once you have used one of your keys, it is then gone forever. We say one, based on Gearbox’s comment “If you’ve only got one Key…” which leads us to believe if you manage to get more than one golden key, you can stack them for multiple play-throughs.

On the note of getting more keys for future runs of Borderlands 2, Gearbox had this to say:

We have a lot of ideas cooking as to how we might be able to distribute Golden Keys in the future — I can’t imagine we’d only distribute them based on physical proximity to events or what social media channels you use — and will be sure to keep you all updated once we have more to share on that.

My 360 version doesn't have any DLC codes, I have two golden keys and that was just from doing the registration trick above?

Thanks to Jkrohn I got another golden key tonight, Which I've spent :)
Thinking about It, It's not worth keeping keys until level 50, Because as far as I've seen with my 3, They've only produced purple items, And I believe orange items are far more rare and powerful, So when you finally cash in your keys the items you receive will be shit compared to the level 50 rare orange items.

Martok has 3 as well. Although he hasn't got a clue where it came from. :?

After looking at what other's have said I think I'll use one at level 20 and another 35. Use them as upgrade gap fillers.

Yeah I was thinking of doing that too. I wonder if you get to use them with each character or if it's per user account.

One key, one unlock of chest for one character. If it's really decent then vault it once you've it's out levelled, dual screen another lower character and pass it onto them (or duplicate your profile and do it that way).

Isn't the claptrap storage in Sanctuary there specifically to swap items between different saves?

But that's what I was thinking yes, grab something now with my level 16 Assassin and use that with my main character until it becomes redundant and then swap it to another character and maybe use another key at that point.

I don't know. I wasn't the one who unlocked it in Sanctuary. :? If it is for that then that's a rather cool function and thanks for the info. :D
