Your first look at the latest from Dead Nation & Resogun studio Housemarque

According to respected sources, UFOs have been sighted around Cologne, Germany. A team of rogue scientists at Housemarque (RESOGUN, Dead Nation, Super Stardust HD) have apparently unleashed an outbreak of alien spores that has the potential to infect all who consume the material.

All netizens are warned to stay on high alert, as the major invasion is expected to begin sometime soon. Only the most ruthless mercenaries that can ravage solo or team up in squads of 4, are expected to survive. The threat is not to be underestimated and our last defense will rely on twin-stick mastery of the third kind.

The technology involved in the occupation is truly out of this world and leaps beyond what humans have experienced in past generations. Contact with the foreigners is expected to bring forth a level of destruction and visual resonance that may render the world as we know it obsolete.

Still, from the top down, it looks as if we have a fighting chance. We can unite and learn together to build up a stronger resistance. Gathering and developing our last resources is the key to success. All fighters are expected to stand-by and expect this event. You have been warned.

Alienation Q&A: What to expect from Housemarque’s Resogun follow-up
The Finnish studio goes into more detail on its explosive Gamescom reveal

On a personal level at least, one of the most pleasing reveals in our Gamescom press briefing last week was a first glimpse at Alienation, the new game Dead Nation creator Housemarque. As a huge fan of classic arcade gameplay, it’s great to see the studio back on the scene so quickly after the phenomenal Resogun.

The launch trailer was predictably splendid, but it also raised plenty of questions. Questions that I wanted answered! So I tracked down Housemarque’s Mikael Haveri after the show in search of a few answers. Read on to find out a little more about what the brilliant Finnish team has in store.

How far back does the idea for Alienation go? Is it something you’ve wanted to make for some time?

Mikael Haveri: We’ve always been a tech-centric company. We start projects by just playing around with tech. We have our own engine which we’re always upgrading and trying out cool new things – new lighting systems, particle effects, and so on. These experiments are the setting point, and then we start implementing those things in different game scenarios. Would this work best in a top-down shooter? Or would it be better suited to, say, a platformer?

So it’s not like we were making Dead Nation and said to ourselves, “Oh, we should do this again… but with aliens!” It was more like, “We’ve got this cool technology – how do we implement it in the best way?”

And then we start iterating. We happily admit that we do borrow from what we think are some of the greatest games ever, but then we reinvent them in the Housemarque way. For example, we play a lot of Dark Souls and Demon Souls, and a lot of different stuff to get inspiration. Then we take a concept we like and try and improve it or put a twist on it.

Dark Souls you say? You’re talking my sort of language Mikael. Can you go into more details on how that influence might manifest itself in the finished game?

Mikael Haveri: We’re not going into too much detail right now but in the trailer there’s a segment where you see co-op play and then a message that says, “Go rogue”. And that’s an indicator of the kind of elements we might have in the game. That’s us asking how we can do interesting things with player relations and I’d say there might be some influences from the Souls series in that aspect of the game. Ask yourself what the scenario might be. Why would you attack another group? Are there factions involved? Let your mind go crazy and think of different reasons players might start murdering each other. I’ve got to keep a little air of mystery here!

Housemarque are of course famous for their love of explosions. How will you be refining that art form in Alienation?

Mikael Haveri: We’ve some really, really cool stuff in Alienation – explosions with smoke plume effects, and next gen effects that you wont have seen before. We’re able to do very dynamic stuff, and very visually pleasing explosions that go beyond the edge of the screen with real physics interactions. You’ll blow something up and the debris will interact with the environment and ricochet off walls. We’re not going the route where absolutely everything is destructible, but a lot of stuff will get blown up.

And grenades. We have a lot of cool grenades. Alien tech grenades. So, explosions are absolutely going to be a mainstay!

Will there be any narrative link to Dead Nation or returning characters?

Mikael Haveri: We’re playing around with that a little bit. We know our core competency and we’re sticking to it. Storytelling will have a role to play, but it will be that classic game storytelling where it’s more of a thrill-ride.

There could be parallels to other Housemarque universes, like how we dropped some Resogun ships into the latest version of Dead Nation. To us, it’s all part of the same multilateral Housemarque universe in some weird way, where everything co-exists. So, you might see some familiar things. Like, a lot of our games feature that female android-y voice. I’m not promising anything but there’s a good chance she might be involved somehow…

How do you think the studio has evolved in the four years since Dead Nation first launched on PS3?

Mikael Haveri: We’ve learned a lot. We’re always trying to improve. Looking back at Dead Nation, it defines a certain type of top-down shooter, and we’re trying to expand on that core experience. It’s been great to come back to that. Some people online have been asking why we haven’t tried our hand at something completely different and we have actually experimented with a lot of things but this is the sort of experience that we’re really passionate about delivering. There are so many cool things that we can do on the PS4, so we feel like we have to make this game.

It was great to see how the ship editor in Resogun really started to go viral – in a similar way to Photo Mode in inFAMOUS Second Son and The Last of Us Remastered. Are you planning on a similar social element in Alienation?

Mikael Haveri: Yes, we’ve tens of thousands of Resogun ships created now. The community still keeps surprising us. Of course, for Alien Nation you can’t make a voxel figure but it’s absolutely something that’s in our minds – as long as it’s good for the player and fun at the same time. Maybe a Photo Mode? Or shareable explosions?

You clearly love making these sorts of classic action games. What is it about the twin-stick shooter formula that you so enjoy?

Mikael Haveri: It’s purely about the gameplay. In Resogun it’s twitch action. You have to be fully immersed in the game and if there’s even a hint of lag or if the framerate is not quite there then you have a problem. And twin stick shooters work that way that too. It’s pure gameplay. If it’s a good experience, it really becomes a part of you. People tell me when they play Resogun they get totally in the zone – and that’s exactly what we’re trying to do. It’s gaming in its purest form.

Alienation release date announced, new trailer debuts
Housemarque’s explosive bug blaster hits PS4 on 26th April

Greetings from Helsinki. The researchers at Housemarque have received warning signs of an impending alien invasion and after much analysis, they are certain that a full blown confrontation is inevitable on 26th April.

Early reports show that there is no need for panic however as a new military sub-section of the UN has been created to specifically handle all incidents of alien outbreaks.

Representing the new force, known as the UNX, Colonel Alexander Clark reports that front line defences seem to be operational and he expects a total eradication of the threat before citizens come into contact with the alien species, dubbed the “Xenos”.

Clark also commented on chaotic footage of an alleged UNX training mission and assures the PlayStation Nation that everything is under control!

Some similarities to a previous “zombie” outbreak (Dead Nation) are visible but Housemarque has clearly upped their game since that last time they had to save the world.

    [IMG][IMG]

As you can see from the trailer, in Alienation, the Xenos are super-aggressive and cars are literally being blown sky high in the heat of battle. However, the amount of weapons at your disposal and the options to upgrade them are enormous. Heavy casualties are expected but co-operation with other UNX agents is the key to becoming an unstoppable force!

Ilari Kuittinen, one of the founders of Housemarque was recently quoted as saying, “We’ve always been a tech centric company and now we have the chance to prove our capabilities to the world in our most ambitious project ever”.

It really seems that alien related R&D has suited us very well and we look forward to seeing you on the battlefield soon! Alienation is available for pre-order on PlayStation Store from today, with a 10% discount on the launch price.

Meet Alienation’s three unique character classes in brand new trailer
See the Tank, the Bio-Specialist and the Saboteur in action

Hi there, Tommaso from Housemarque speaking. Today I’m here to tell you more about the three classes of UNX soldiers available in Alienation. They are “mankind’s last hope” – with alien forces closing in on the last strongholds of humanity, the UNX world government has resorted to mechanised infantry in a last attempt to save the planet. Players can choose from three distinct combat exoskeletons, which grant their users superhuman abilities.

Each class – the Tank, the Bio-Specialist and the Saboteur – is built with a specific playstyle in mind and since the game supports drop-in/drop-out gameplay, your four-player squad’s composition might even change during the course of the same mission!

Each class has a unique primary weapon, three unique upgradable active abilities and three upgradable passive abilities. On release day, players will be able to level-up from Level 1 to 30 in either campaign missions, bounties, or procedurally generated scenarios we don’t want to spoil for you.

    Let’s see the classes!

    Bio-Specialist:
Every game this brutal needs at least one class that heals other players: that’s the Bio-Specialist. That said, she’s also very competent at creating areas of damage using a poisonous trail, or take control of powerful nanomachines to swarm enemies and chip away their HPs.

    Tank:
The Tank is all about protection and splash damage: if you’re under heavy fire you want one next to you sharing his shield, or if you’re overrun by too many enemies he can blow everything away and give you room to maneuver. Plus, he’s the only character able to command a devastating death ray piercing everything in a straight line!

    Saboteur:
If you like swift characters you’re gonna love the Saboteur. He becomes invisible, and uses his plasma sword to clear the area in front of him with ease. When some help is needed, he can also call in deadly airstrikes to open paths through a sea of Xenos.

Each class has passive abilities that are divided into three “tracks”: Athlete, Warrior and Survivor. Like the active abilities, each track can be upgraded several times. Each time an Ability point is spent, you’ll be asked to make a tough decision between two possible upgrade options. For example, do you want the Health orbs to give you back more HP or extend the duration of the Xenoflowers boosts?

If you’re worried about spec’ing your character in a way that will bite back during missions down the line, fear not! You can always re-spec your UNX soldier to suit your playstyle.

Sounds fun? Because it is! For those of you who want to see more of our UNX soldiers in action, be sure to check out our latest gameplay trailer above.

We can’t wait for you to get your hands on the game and try out all possible combinations by yourself – remember that you can pre-order the game today straight from PlayStation Store to obtain our unique Alienation dynamic theme and a 10% discount! We’re almost there!

WTF izzit these days with folks not spell checking press releases & commercial releases?
SHIELD - they even wrote it correctly underneath.
    Same goes for ARTILLERY!
Can't remember what it was in Battlefront yesterday that infuriated me,
some mispelling of the old "cei" in the Hutt contracts I think.
Receipt or something similar, I'm guessing.

Anyway, I digress. Interested in this. :)

It's Deadnation though isn't it? And I believe you both enjoyed that...I think just by a glance it's fair to say whatever your opinion of Deadnation was will equally apply to this.

For me that means it's a decent little game that i'll happily play when it's free.....roll on this appearing as a free game.

    No it's not.

As it says in the Eurogamer review linked above (and it's worth reading the whole of it to get the full gist of the game):
    Pushsquare says in its review:
    Destructoid says:

To say it is just a reskinned Dead Nation is to do it injustice. Yes the view is the same and it's a twin stick shooter, however there are differences and it's a deeper game than its predecessor. In some ways it's a bit like a cross between Helldivers, Dead Nation and XCOM.

Alienation adds weekly missions, new weapons and more
Plus a new difficulty level and more ways to personalise your loadout

Hi there, it’s Tommaso from Housemarque here. At the beginning of July, Alienation saw the addition of two widely requested features: local co-op and ranked leagues, among a variety of novelties such as extra weapons, bullet colours and other minor improvements.

The next update, that is hitting your PS4 today, unleashes an array of new exciting features. Let’s start with the stuff every Alienation owner will get free of charge: Weekly Missions! These are missions to be played with unusual rules for an additional challenge – beat them within seven days and you’ll get a reward! And since we’re talking about rewards, it’s definitely worth mentioning that we heard you loud and clear: you can now loot and collect armours with different modifiers (for example, an armour that recharges your rush faster, but makes reload slower), and even customize their colours provided you collect enough of the 42 different paints available…

Other free additions to the game include an extra difficulty level (named “Legend”), six new Trophies and increased Hero Level cap.

    [IMG][IMG][IMG]

Along with the free content we’re also releasing more paid content: new arsenal, with the secondary weapon Devastator and the heavy Collapser, respectively resembling a sort of deadly laser ray and a cannon with bouncing projectiles. The Armour Paint Pack features three exclusive armour paints, and the Veteran Heroes pack, which allows you to start with characters at Level 15 and access to World Level 2.

You’ll be able to purchase the Weapon Pack for €4.99, the Armor Paint Pack for €0.99, the Veteran Heroes pack for €4.99, or buy each individual item separately. Needless to say, owners of the Alienation Season Pass get all of the above without spending a single extra dime.

So, what are you waiting for? Head to PlayStation Store and grab one right now!
